The fifteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has taken place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from 9 to 20 May 2022. A side event, entitled "Solar Empowers Land and People: from Scarcity to Prosperity – Integrated Solutions for Water, Food and Ecosystems", co-hosted by the UNCCD Secretariat and Tsinghua University, was held both online and offline on May 16. Prof. LEI Jiaqiang was invited to deliver a keynote speech via video and individual research members from the ANSO-Association for Combating Desertification (ANSO-ACD) joined the online meeting.

The welcoming address was given by Mr. Marcos Montoiro, NGO and CSO Liaison Officer, UNCCD Secretariat. Representatives from UNCCD, Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW), FAO and ISA attended the meeting.

Prof. LEI Jiaqiang, as the Chairman of ANSO-ACD and an expert in desertification control, shared the research progress on the Green Great Wall Intervention Zone in recent years in the keynote speech titled "Technical Cooperation and Prospect of the Great Green Wall Construction in Africa", and discussed the possibility and prospect of coordinated development of photovoltaics and desertification control in the future construction of the Great Green Wall.

For the current development dilemma facing the global drylands, an integrated solution combining solar energy and sustainable land management may be a viable option. This event brought scientists, policymakers, private sectors and practitioners together to share the emerging cases of the co-development of solar energy and sustainable land management in different regions, and to discuss their scale-up potential in Africa.
