A research team led by Prof. TAN Zhiliang from the Institute of Subtropical Agriculture (ISA), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), conducted academic exchanges and field visits to Nakhon Ratchasima Province and Bangkok in Thailand to implement the research work of the ANSO Science Based-advisory project “Association of Livestock Breeding with Zero Hunger and Assessment of the Potential Contribution of Science and Technology in the Belt and Road Countries.”
Prof. TAN’s research team, along with Prof. Dr. Anil Kumar's research team from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT, an ANSO member unit), Dr. Pramote Paengkoum’s research team from the Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) and Dr. Suntorn Wittayakun from the Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna, visited SUT farm, Dan Khun Thot Agricultural Cooperative Co., Ltd., and Phimai Dairy Cooperative Co., Ltd. Combining the accumulation and analysis of data related to the scale of livestock breeding and zero hunger goal in Asia, Prof. TAN’s research team discovered the current situation and characteristics of zero hunger for livestock nutrition in Thailand and analyzed the temporal and spatial variation of the indicators restricting the production of livestock products, such as animal feed, water, and land resources supply. Prof. TAN’s research team also compared the differences and potential between China and Thailand in terms of productive capacity, supply capacity, and guarantee capacity to achieve the goal of zero hunger nutrition.
Overall, this project has enhanced the platform's role in personnel training, academic exchange, interdisciplinary innovation, and technology promotion and application, which will help promote livestock cooperation and contribute to achieving SDG 2: ensuring food security, improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture under the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
