Kunming, 23 April, 2025 – The ICIMOD-China Partners’ Day took place at the Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), serving as a side event during the 56th Governing Board Meeting of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). The gathering aimed to foster mutual learning, facilitate networking, showcase partners’ initiatives, expand collaborative frameworks, and rally support for addressing sustainable development challenges in the Himalayan region.
Co-chaired by Prof. Kang Shichang, Vice Chairperson of the Chinese National Committee for ICIMOD (CNICIMOD), and Prof. Su Lijun, a Committee Member of CNICIMOD, the event convened experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Lanzhou University, Sichuan University, the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and other institutions. Participants shared insights and highlighted research achievements from collaborative efforts among Chinese partners, ICIMOD, and its member countries, underscoring the impact of cross-border scientific cooperation.
Dr. Pema Gyamcho, Director of ICIMOD; Prof. Niu Yang, Deputy Director-General of KIB/CAS; and Prof. Quan Zhijun, Vice Chairperson of CNICIMOD, delivered opening remarks. They warmly welcomed attendees and commended the longstanding cooperation between ICIMOD and its Chinese partners. They strongly hoped to deepen partnerships across all domains to address shared environmental and developmental challenges.
At ICIMOD’s invitation, Ms. Wang Zhongxiu from the ANSO Secretariat attended the event and expounded on the international collaboration under the ANSO framework, including multilateral research projects, training workshops, and international network initiatives that promote healthy and sustainable development in the Himalayan region and beyond.
This Partners’ Day reinforced the importance of collaborative action in advancing sustainable development in one of the world’s most ecologically vulnerable and culturally rich regions, laying the groundwork for future joint initiatives among ICIMOD, its Chinese partners, and global networks like ANSO.
Established in 1983, ICIMOD is a regional intergovernmental organization dedicated to transforming the Hindu Kush Himalayan region into a more sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient landscape. As a founding member of ANSO, ICIMOD continues to play a pivotal role in fostering multilateral partnerships to address the unique challenges of mountain ecosystems.
