The Kickoff Meeting & the 1st Workshop of ANSO-MISSPAD Project

25 08, 2020

The kickoff meeting & the 1st workshop of the Multi-model-Integrated Subseasonal-to-Seasonal Prediction and Application in Disaster Risk Reduction (MISSPAD), one of the joint research cooperation projects  of ANSO, was successfully held on August 10, 2020. Chaired by Prof. Guoxiong Wu, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Prof. Qing Bao, Professor of Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) of CAS, about 20 experts from 14 institutions participated this online meeting.

The Principal Investigator (PI) of ANSO-MISSPAD, Prof. Qing Bao introduced the latest progresses of the project, such as developing and constructing Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S) forecasting system and data center, joining the international organization plan, the application of the forecast system in the countries along the Belt and Road (B&R), young scientists cultivation and project seminars. Prof. Hongli Ren from the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences introduced the development of the multi-model ensemble system, and Prof. Jing Yang from the Academy of Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management of Beijing Normal University proposed the activity of extending extreme event prediction to risk prediction to meet the needs of the end-users.

The participating experts discussed on the status and future plans of ANSO-MISSPAD, including improving the evaluation work of the forecast results, identifying the model predictability sources and uncertainties, focusing on the interpretation and application of the research results and products, as well as strengthening personnel exchange and international training. Prof. Jinghua Cao, the Executive Director of ANSO Secretariat, encouraged the PI and collaborators to establish cooperation network with more ANSO members, seek stronger support from relevant national and local governments in B&R countries by strengthening the information and resource exchange with CAS overseas centers.
