ANSO Supported Project's Research Capacity Building Training commenced in Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu

Assessing Households’ Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change

Research capacity building training on 'data analysis and scientific paper writing' took place in Kathmandu from September 4 to 10, 2023. The training aimed to enhance the research capacity of junior faculties and PhD scholars and was supported by the ANSO Collaborative Research Project entitled' “Assessing Households’ Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change in the Diverse Socio-Cultural and Geographical Landscape of South Asia” led by Prof. Prem S. Chapagain of the Central Department of Geography, Tribhuvan University, Nepal. The Central Department of Geography (CDG), Tribhuvan University (TU), and Kathmandu Center for Research and Education, Chinese Academy of Science (KCRE-CAS) jointly organized the training. 

Prof. Cao Jinghua, Executive Director of the ANSO Secretariat addressed the participants online. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation for high-quality research in the field of climate   and truly hoped that this training would benefit all participants, and facilitate cooperation and partnerships in the area. Prof. Dr. Prem Sagar Chapagain, coordinator of the training program and PI of the ANSO funded research, welcomed all the participants and highlighted about the aims and objectives of the training. Prof. Dr. Dharma Kanta Baskota, Vice Chancellor of TU, emphasized the importance of data analysis and scientific writing in addressing challenges, especially in the Himalayan region. He pledged to provide world-class education and research opportunities through collaboration, and pointed out the importance of research capacity development. 

Mr. Wang Xin, the Consular of the People's Republic of China to Nepal, highlighted the global cooperation in academic endeavors and the strong ties between Nepal and China in education and research, and expressed continuous support for such activities. Mr. Wang Tao, Executive Director of KCRE, emphasized the collaboration with TU and the achievements in scientific research and training assuring for future cooperation.   
      
The training was a part of the ANSO collaborative research project. There were 14 technical sessions in the training. Each session was followed by the hands-on-exercise. The first 4 days was devoted to data management and analysis and remaining three days covered scientific paper writing skill. A total of 27 faculty members and researchers (22 males and 5 females) from 10 different discipline under three universities of Nepal participated in the training. A survey taken by the organizers showed that out of a total of 27 participants, 78% thought it was extremely relevant, 19% said the training was relevant and 4% thought it was useful to their future career.

The seven-day research capacity-building training was successfully completed. On the last day, certificates of achievement were awarded to the participants by Prof. Kusum Shakya, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FoHSS). Addressing the closing program, Prof. Kusum praised the CDG and KCRE for organizing such an essential training program. She emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary research in solving complex societal issues. Prof. Binil Aryal, Dean of the Institute of Science and Technology (IoST) focused on the need for data analysis to bridge the gap between theory and practice. The Director of International Relations thanked to CDGTU for such collaborative research and organizing training.
